Amid a noticeable shift of users towards private telecom operators like Airtel and Jio, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is taking proactive measures to retain its customer base. To counter the decline in subscriber numbers, BSNL has proposed a unique plan to the government: utilizing Vodafone Idea’s 4G network for its services. Given the government’s significant shareholding in Vodafone Idea (approximately 33.1%), this collaboration is feasible.
BSNL argues that leveraging Vodafone Idea’s network could accelerate the rollout of 4G services across India, particularly in areas where BSNL’s network presence is limited. The absence of 4G services is cited as a primary reason for BSNL users shifting to other operators now offering 5G services.
By tapping into Vodafone Idea’s network, BSNL aims to provide competitive services and prevent further migration to rivals like Jio and Airtel. Supporting this request, the BSNL Employee Union has written to IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasizing the strategic advantage of this move given the government’s significant stake in both telecom companies.
This collaboration is seen as a crucial step in strengthening BSNL’s service offerings and maintaining its competitive presence in the telecom market. If approved, this initiative could significantly enhance BSNL’s position in the Indian telecom sector, offering customers improved 4G services and setting the stage for future advancements.
