Union Minister of State for Defence and Tourism, Ajay Bhatt, unveiled the country’s inaugural biodegradable water bottle at the National Conference on “Millets for Military Ration and Specific Nutritional Requirements” in Mysuru. Developed by the Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL), a DRDO lab, the eco-friendly innovation aims to combat plastic pollution resulting from littering and insufficient recycling practices.
The Breakthrough Innovation
DFRL’s eco-conscious initiative introduces poly lactic acid-based (PLA) water bottles designed to alleviate the pervasive issue of plastic waste. Compliant with ISO 17088-2021 and IS 17899 T: 2022 Standards, these sustainable bottles are not only compostable but also deemed safe for food and beverage contact applications. The bottle cap and label, too, align with the compostable ethos.
Technical Features and Sustainability Impact
Transparent and durable, the PLA water bottle boasts strength comparable to traditional PET bottles. Crafted entirely from 100% bio-based and renewable sources, this innovation promotes sustainability and significantly reduces dependence on non-renewable resources. Developed in collaboration with Konkan Speciality Polyproducts Private Limited, Mangaluru, these bottles are specifically designed to contain 250 ml of potable water, utilising the injection blow moulding technique.
Official Unveiling
Minister Ajay Bhatt inaugurated the biodegradable water bottles at the national conference, attended by dignitaries such as DRDO Chairman Samir V Kamat, DG (Life Sciences) DRDO U K Singh, and officers from the Indian Army and DRDO. The introduction of these innovative bottles marks a pivotal moment in India’s pursuit of greener alternatives and sets a precedent for eco-friendly practices in packaging.
DFRL’s pioneering efforts in creating biodegradable water bottles present a promising solution to the plastic pollution crisis. This eco-friendly initiative aligns with global environmental goals and underscores the importance of sustainable practices in daily living. The collaboration with industry partners and the official launch at a national conference reflect a collective commitment to ushering in a greener and more sustainable future.
