The success of Indian startups is not only evident in boardroom discussions but also in the marketplace, as their ideas have become products and services consumed by the masses. In 2022 alone, Indian startups reportedly raised a staggering $42 billion, underscoring a substantial gain.
To commemorate National Startup Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi annually calls for an emphasis on fostering entrepreneurship and supporting the growth of startups. He acknowledged that the success of startups is pivotal in realizing the vision of a new India. The Global Innovation Index recognized India’s ascent from 81st to 40th position, a substantial leap attributed to the significant contributions of startups. The emphasis on fostering innovation, building an ecosystem conducive to startups, and generating employment has positioned India as a transformative force on the global stage.
The annual event, inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in 2016, aims to highlight the achievements of startups and their role in shaping the New India. Recognizing their crucial role in the country’s growth, the Prime Minister has consistently encouraged the nation to witness the potential of young entrepreneurs, urging them to contribute to job creation and economic development.
The Startup India initiative, launched in 2016, has been instrumental in providing a conducive environment for startups to thrive. The initiative has introduced various schemes, including the Seed Fund Scheme, Fund of Funds Scheme, Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups, and Mentorship Platforms, contributing to the growth of the Indian startup ecosystem.
As of 2023, India boasts a staggering 1,15,000 active startups, a stark contrast to the 340 startups present in the country at the time of the Startup India launch. The Seed Fund Scheme, Fund of Funds Scheme, Credit Guarantee Scheme for Startups, and the Mentorship Platform have played a pivotal role in nurturing and supporting these startups.
