Maldives-India Tourism Clash Sparks Controversy

A series of local Maldivian news websites published sensational headlines in the Dhivehi language, claiming that India had initiated a campaign against tourism in the Maldives. The situation escalated when diplomats and high-ranking officials in President Mohamed Muizzu’s government began endorsing and sharing derogatory content, encouraging others to join in. Following the social media uproar, the Maldives National Party issued a statement condemning the racist and derogatory comments made by a government official against a foreign head of state, calling it unacceptable and urging the government to take action.

The Maldives National Party swiftly responded to the uproar, issuing a statement condemning the racist and derogatory comments made by a government official against a foreign head of state. The party deemed such behaviour unacceptable and urged the government to take immediate action. Subsequently, various political parties in the Opposition joined the chorus of condemnation against Muizzu’s officials’ rhetoric.

Faced with mounting criticism, the Maldives’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs felt compelled to release a statement addressing the derogatory remarks circulating on social media platforms. They clarified that these opinions were personal and did not represent the government’s views, emphasizing their commitment to taking action against those responsible for making such remarks.

In a significant turn of events, Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef, and Mahzoom Majid faced suspension for their comments targeting Prime Minister Modi, sparking a substantial public backlash.

Adding to the diplomatic tension, a campaign against tourism in Lakshadweep prompted Bollywood celebrities and prominent Indian sportspersons to launch a coordinated ‘Visit Lakshadweep’ campaign on January 7. Actor Akshay Kumar openly referenced the hateful and racist comments from prominent figures in the Maldives in his post.

“Surprised that they are doing this to a country that sends them the maximum number of tourists. We are good to our neighbours but why should we tolerate such unprovoked hate. I’ve visited the Maldives many times and always praised it, but dignity first. Let us decide to #ExploreIndianIslands and support our own tourism,” the actor wrote.

Impact of India – Maldives Tourism

The impact on India-Maldives tourism is palpable, with tour operators anticipating potential disruptions to holiday plans. Despite the suspension of three ministers for their disparaging social media posts, concerns persist within the industry. Indian tourists have consistently ranked among the top nationalities visiting the Maldives, with over 200,000 travellers in 2023 alone. Tourism constitutes over 28% of the Maldives’ GDP, making it highly dependent on this industry.

The Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO) suggests that the effects of recent events and the call for a boycott may become evident over the next 20-25 days. Contrary to reports of mass cancellations, tour operators argue that those who have already paid for plane tickets and accommodations are unlikely to cancel their plans.

In response to the mockery from Maldivians, Ahmed Adeeb, Maldives’ former Minister of Tourism, emphasized the importance of maintaining positive relations and a friendly approach for the well-being of the Maldives tourism industry and economy.

Meanwhile, as the boycott campaign gains momentum, EaseMyTrip’s CEO and co-founder, Nishant Pitti, declared the suspension of all flight reservations to the Maldives in solidarity with the nation. Pitti made the announcement on social media, stating, “In support of our nation, @EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings.”
