Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and initiated projects worth INR 1,150 crore in the Union Territory of Lakshadweep. These projects, launched in the presence of numerous islanders, include the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fibre Connection (KLI-SOFC) project. Announced during Modi’s Independence Day speech in August 2020, this initiative aims to address the challenge of slow internet speed in Lakshadweep by increasing it from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps. The connection through a submarine optical fibre cable signifies a significant upgrade in communication infrastructure, benefiting internet services, telemedicine, e-governance, education, digital banking, and literacy in the islands.
Additionally, the Prime Minister inaugurated the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant in Kadmat, set to produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water daily. He also dedicated the Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in all households on the Agatti and Minicoy islands. Other projects launched include a solar power plant in Kavaratti, the first battery-backed solar power project in Lakshadweep. Furthermore, he laid the foundation stone for the renovation of the primary health care facility in Kalpeni and the construction of five model Anganwadi centers (Nand Ghars) in Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti, and Minicoy islands.
