X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, is reintroducing news headlines in user posts, overturning a modification implemented by owner Elon Musk. In October, Musk announced alterations to how links to news posts would appear in users’ feeds, eliminating headlines and accompanying text alongside images.
The revised format displayed only the lead image of most linked articles, with a small link to the outlet’s web address for identification. Musk had earlier expressed his intention to remove headlines in August, citing a direct aesthetic improvement initiative on his part.
Critics contended that the removal of headlines made it challenging to discern shared news articles and their source. Recent developments indicate a reversal of this change, allowing users to post links with headline text appearing at the bottom left of the image in a smaller font.
While neither X nor Musk has commented on the reversal, the shift signifies a response to user feedback. Musk, who acquired the platform for $44 billion last fall, has been vocal about his disdain for traditional news outlets, encouraging publishers to share content directly on the platform rather than through external links.
