In the heartland of Kerala lies Kottayam, a city that not only boasts lush landscapes but also a rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and flavours. In this episode of Culinary Journeys, we embark on a delightful exploration of the distinctive culinary heritage of Kottayam’s Christian community. From the famed Kottayam wine to traditional delights like Ellum Kappayum, Pidi, Kozhi, and festive Christmas dishes, this gastronomic adventure promises a tantalising experience.

Kottayam Wine

Our journey begins with the renowned Kottayam wine, a beverage deeply intertwined with the local Christian culture. Produced with passion and precision, Kottayam wine is a symbol of celebration and community gatherings. The unique blend of locally grown grapes creates a wine with a flavour profile that reflects the warmth and vibrancy of the people.

Ellum Kappayum

As we delve into the culinary landscape, we encounter Ellum Kappayum, a traditional dish that captures the essence of Kottayam’s Christian kitchens. Prepared with tapioca (Kappa) and beef (with bones) (Ellu), this dish is a gastronomic delight that showcases the perfect balance of textures and flavours. The smoky aroma of the Ellum blends harmoniously with the starchy goodness of Kappa, creating a dish that is both comforting and exotic.

Pidi and Kozhi

Next on our culinary journey are Pidi and Kozhi, a dynamic duo that exemplifies the artistry of Kottayam’s Christian kitchens. Pidi, small rice dumplings, are lovingly crafted and paired with a flavorful chicken curry (Kozhi). The delicate, pillowy Pidi soak up the rich, aromatic gravy, creating a culinary symphony that resonates with every bite. It’s a testament to the meticulous preparation and deep-rooted culinary expertise of Kottayam’s Christians.

Christmas Dishes

No exploration of Kottayam’s Christian culinary traditions is complete without diving into the festive Christmas dishes. The air is filled with the aroma of freshly baked plum cakes, rose cookies, and the savoury goodness of appam and stew. Families come together to celebrate, sharing traditional delicacies that have been passed down through generations.

Mutton Stew – Pepper Delight

As we conclude our culinary journey through Kottayam, we are left with a profound appreciation for the unique flavours and traditions of the local Christian community. From the spirited Kottayam wine to the delectable Ellum Kappayum, Pidi, Kozhi, and festive Christmas dishes, every bite tells a story of heritage, community, and the joy of sharing a meal with loved ones. Join us in savouring the distinct culinary treasures that make Kottayam a true gastronomic gem in the heart of Kerala.
