The Geological Survey of India (GSI) is embracing cutting-edge technologies such as drones, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Machine Learning (ML) to revolutionize mineral exploration, according to a PTI report. This strategic move is aimed at enhancing efficiency, accuracy, and resource optimization, leading to the identification of hidden mineral deposits, as per an official statement.

Janardan Prasad, the Director General of GSI, highlighted the increasing popularity of AI and ML technologies in mineral exploration. These advanced tools facilitate the integration of diverse datasets using proven machine learning algorithms, ensuring precise delineation of potential mineralization areas. The application of AI, in particular, enables the generation of 4D models by incorporating a time component. This feature allows for the reproduction of the dynamic evolution of geological structures and the reconstruction of the past deformation history of geological formations. Prasad shared these insights during a workshop hosted by GSI.

Mines Secretary V L Kantha Rao urged exploration agencies and startups in the field to prioritize critical minerals, potash, and concealed deposits. Stressing the importance of new-age technology, especially AI and ML, Rao emphasized that traditional methods of processing geo-scientific data are time-consuming, expensive, and sometimes limited in accuracy. The adoption of advanced technologies is seen as crucial for expediting mineral exploration activities in the country. The integration of drones, AI, and ML not only promises more efficient exploration but also holds the potential to save time and resources while uncovering valuable mineral resources.
