Krutrim SI Designs, the brainchild of Ola co-founder Bhavish Aggarwal, has recently introduced a groundbreaking family of multilingual artificial intelligence (AI) models designed specifically for the Indian ecosystem. Named ‘Krutrim,’ which translates to ‘artificial’ in Sanskrit, these models aim to address the distinctive requirements of the Indian market.
Krutrim Models for India:
Krutrim is presented in two sizes, each catering to different needs. The base model, Krutrim, has been trained on an extensive 2 trillion tokens and unique datasets. Additionally, a more advanced model, Krutrim Pro, is set to launch next quarter, offering enhanced problem-solving and task execution capabilities. Bhavish Aggarwal emphasized the importance of creating an “India-first AI” that understands the cultural context and is trained on datasets specific to the country.
Multilingual Capabilities:
One of Krutrim’s standout features is its proficiency in understanding 22 Indian languages, with the ability to generate content in approximately 10 languages. This includes Marathi, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Odia, Gujarati, and Malayalam, ensuring a comprehensive linguistic coverage.
Early Access and Release Timeline:
Interested users can now sign up for the base model, with early access rolling out in batches. The full open release of Krutrim is scheduled for January 2024, and developers can access Krutrim APIs starting February 2024. Aggarwal revealed that Ola group companies are already leveraging Krutrim for various internal tasks, such as customer support, voice and chat, and customer sales calls.
Future Plans:
Krutrim SI Designs has ambitious plans beyond just AI models. The company intends to launch a supercomputer within the next two years and is actively working on developing AI infrastructure, including indigenous data centers, server computing, edge computing, and supercomputers. Prototypes are slated for mid-2024, with a production roadmap set to be unveiled by the end of 2025.
Performance and Comparison:
According to senior executives, Krutrim outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4 in Indian languages, both in terms of timing and computation. While excelling in English, Krutrim is reported to perform better than Meta’s Llama 2 chat but falls behind GPT-4, Google’s Bard, and Gemini.
Operational Modes and Availability:
Krutrim is versatile, operating in multiple modes, including text and voice. The model is poised to be available for both wide-scale consumer usage and priced enterprise applications in the future.
Infrastructure Development:
In addition to the AI models, Krutrim SI Designs aims to create its own chiplets and other AI-focused hardware for data centers, underlining the significance of infrastructure and silicon alongside the AI model.
Corporate Structure and Collaboration:
Bhavish Aggarwal clarified that Krutrim SI Designs operates as a separate entity and not as a subsidiary of Ola Cabs or Ola Electric. However, he hinted at potential collaboration, emphasizing the possibility of data sharing and usage synergy between the three entities.
Launched in April 2023, Krutrim SI Designs is poised to revolutionize the AI landscape in India, offering tailored solutions that align with the nation’s cultural and linguistic diversity. With a focus on accessibility, innovation, and infrastructure development, Krutrim is set to make significant strides in the realm of artificial intelligence.
