Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, emphasizing the significant role India plays in the field of AI. The GPAI, consisting of 29 member countries, aims to bridge the gap between AI theory and practice by supporting cutting-edge research and applied activities in AI-related priorities.
In his address to the gathering, PM Modi expressed his delight at India leading the GPAI Summit in 2024 amid the global debate on artificial intelligence. Recognizing both the positive and negative aspects of AI, he highlighted the responsibility each nation holds and discussed his interactions with industry leaders on the subject. Shri. Modi further underscored the impact of AI on countries of all sizes and advocated for a cautious approach moving forward.
The Prime Minister then praised the vibrant AI spirit in India, with its youth pushing the boundaries of AI technology. He cited examples such as the recently launched AI agriculture chatbot designed to assist farmers. Modi also discussed the applications of AI in healthcare and Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing its role in shaping the future.
Stressing the significance of AI, Modi stated that it is the foundation for sculpting a new future, connecting people, ensuring economic development, and promoting equality and social justice. He emphasized the importance of inclusive AI development, calling for the integration of democratic values to prevent technological inequality. Modi urged for a balance between efficiency and ethics, underscoring the role of human and democratic values in determining the direction of AI development.
On the contrary, the PM also raised concerns on AI usage. According to him, besides the challenge of deepfakes, cyber security, and data theft, AI tools falling in the hands of terrorists pose a big threat. Global security will face a big threat if AI-laced weapons were to reach terrorist organisations. We have to deliberate on this issue and reach a concrete plan to stop the misuse of AI,” he said.
He further added, “Just like we have agreements and protocols for various international issues, we have to create a global framework for the ethical use of AI. This will include a protocol for testing and deployment of high-risk and frontier AI tools.”
In conclusion, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence that the GPAI Summit would provide an excellent platform for the exchange of ideas and a valuable learning experience for all delegates. He anticipated that the outcomes of the summit, when implemented, would contribute to building a responsible and sustainable future.
