OpenAI, under the leadership of Sam Altman, has reportedly joined forces with Rishi Jaitly, former head of Twitter India, to gain a better understanding of India’s AI policies and regulations. This collaboration aims to navigate the complex landscape of AI governance in India. According to a recent TechCrunch report, Jaitly has taken on the role of senior advisor at OpenAI, with a focus on facilitating dialogues with the government on AI policies. The report also mentioned OpenAI’s intentions to establish a local team in India, signaling a strategic move to engage with the growing AI ecosystem in the country.
After leaving Twitter in late 2016, Jaitly became the co-founder and CEO of Times Bridge, the global investment arm of The Times Group.
In related developments, Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s vice president of global affairs, is scheduled to address the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) summit in Delhi in the coming week.
During Altman’s visit to India in June, he had a significant interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on India’s expanding tech landscape and the potential of AI for the country.
Jaitly’s official employment status with OpenAI is unclear, but he has taken on a role as an advisor, guiding the company in building connections and establishing a presence in India.
