The inaugural Transplant Games organized by the Heart Care Foundation unfolded as a remarkable testament to inspiration and celebration. The event commenced at the prestigious Rajiv Gandhi Indoor Stadium in Kaloor, awakening Kochi to a day filled with enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
The festivities kicked off with a 5-kilometer race, originating from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Kaloor. This invigorating race was inaugurated by none other than Kochouseph Chittilappilly, a prominent industrialist and a kidney donor. The symbolic Baton Torch was handed over to Padma Shri Bharath Mammootty, marking the conclusion of a successful cycling rally at the Regional Sports Centre, organized by the Muziris Cyclists’ Club and commencing from Kaloor Stadium.
The event’s proceedings were presided over by Major Ravi, who, having accepted a kidney, played a significant role in the ceremony. Distinguished dignitaries such as K-SOTTO Executive Director Noble Gracious, State Treasurer of the Liver Foundation Babu Kuruvila, Dr. Jose Chacko Periyapuram, Dr. Jacob Abraham, and Dr. Joe Joseph added grace to the occasion. In total, approximately 450 individuals enthusiastically participated in the 11 competitions, showcasing the spirit of generosity and resilience. The participants included 29 liver donors, 47 kidney donors, 130 liver recipients, 111 kidney recipients, and 31 heart recipients.
A Remarkable Milestone in India’s Record Book
The Transplant Games achieved a remarkable milestone by earning a place in the India Book of Records, recognizing it as the largest gathering of transplant recipients, donors, and the families of cadaveric organ donors. The enthralling competitions featured special categories designed for donors and recipients, creating a level playing field and fostering a sense of inclusivity.
The event received active participation from India Book of Records representatives, adding an extra layer of recognition to the achievements of the Transplant Games. The ceremony was inaugurated by Minister for Law, Industries, and Coir P. Rajeev and Minister for Local Self-Governments M. B Rajesh, further emphasizing the government’s support for such impactful initiatives.
The collaborative efforts of organizations like K-SOTTO, LIFOK, Kochi Municipal Corporation, KMRL, Regional Sports Center, GCDA, and the Kerala State Youth Welfare Board played a pivotal role in bringing the Transplant Games to life. Hon’ble speaker of Kerala Legislative Assembly A N Shamseer falicitated the valedictory function of Transplant Games, not only celebrated the spirit of sportsmanship but also raised awareness about organ donation, making it a truly momentous occasion for Kochi and beyond.
