The Emirates ID card is an essential document for residents in the UAE, serving as proof of identity and residency details for all official documentation. However, failure to renew or update the card within 30 days from the expiry date comes with consequences – late fines of Dh20 per day, reaching a maximum of Dh1,000. The good news is that exemptions from these penalties are available under specific circumstances.

Criteria for Exemption Eligibility

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security has outlined clear eligibility criteria for individuals seeking exemption from late fines. These circumstances include:

Extended Absence from the Country: Individuals who have left the UAE for more than three months, and their identity card expired during this period.

Deportation or Legal Proceedings: Those facing deportation, administrative decisions, judicial rulings, or individuals whose passports are seized pending cases, with documented proof from competent authorities.

Pre-Nationalization Period: Individuals who were not issued an identity card before obtaining UAE nationality and a family book.

Health-Related Conditions: Bed-ridden individuals or those suffering from contagious diseases or partial/full disabilities, verified by a medical certificate.

Diplomatic Staff: Staff of diplomatic or consular missions in the country and individuals under their care.

Elderly Exemption: Individuals aged 70 or older, unable to visit customer happiness centers, can be exempted if age is proven through official documents.

Social Security Status: Emiratis under the social security system and those under their sponsorship, needing financial status proof from relevant authorities.

Computer Error: Exemption is granted if the delay is due to a computer error.

The Application Process

Applying for Emirates ID late penalty exemption is a straightforward process:

Initiate Renewal Request: Start by submitting a renewal request through approved printing offices, the authority’s website, or the smart application.

Check Fees: The system displays associated fees, including late fees. If eligible for exemption, proceed to the next step.

Submit Exemption Request: Through the smart services system, submit the exemption request along with required documents.

Track Application: Monitor the application progress, receiving an SMS with the application number.

Approval/Rejection: Within 48 hours, another SMS will confirm approval or rejection. If rejected, fines must be paid within the stipulated time.

By understanding the exemption criteria and following the application process, residents can navigate the Emirates ID renewal journey efficiently, ensuring compliance without unnecessary financial burdens.
