According to close sources, knowledge of the initiative, Tata Electronics, a division of the Tata Group, plans to grow its current iPhone-casing facility in Hosur to a maximum capacity of twice the current factory.
Recently, the business bought Wistron’s iPhone assembly factory in Narasapura, in the Kolar region of Karnataka. According to a source quoted by ET, the company wants to greatly increase its capacity for high-end electronic item and accessory contracts manufacturing.
A senior government source told ET that the business aims to increase the unit’s size and capacity by 1.5–2 times.
According to the official, “The new facility could be used entirely for Apple phone components, but I would not rule out the possibility that it is also used to manufacture components for other high-end phones of other companies.”
The growth of Tata Electronics fits nicely with Apple’s larger strategy to improve smartphone production in India. According to other sources, the Tata Group company is prepared to boost volumes and it would cater to Apple’s growing export demand.
An essential component of Apple’s China-plus-one strategy is played by Tata Electronics, the only Indian company on Apple’s vendor shortlist.
Based on information that is currently accessible, Apple surpassed Samsung to become India’s top exporter of smartphones during the second quarter.
According to reports in September, Apple supplied 49% of the nation’s 12 million shipments in the June quarter, compared to 45% for its Korean competitor.
