The tram depot at Al Sufouh and the Dubai Metro depots in Jebel Ali and Al Qusais are getting solar energy panels installed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).
The project is reportedly scheduled to be finished by the first quarter of 2024 and will generate 9.959 megawatts of solar energy in total.
It is a component of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy and the Shams Dubai program of the Dubai government.
As per available sources, the project will also help the authority achieve its goal of having all public transportation vehicles have net-zero emissions by 2050. The project aims to decarbonize all limos, taxis, and buses while developing its facilities to use almost no energy.
The Roads and Transport Authority reported last year that implementing green regulations had resulted in yearly savings of Dh86 million.
The Net Zero 2050 Charter was signed in March by seven emirates and the UAE government. It contains a promise to implement and keep an eye on policies to lessen the impact of climate change on public health, biodiversity, the environment, and biosecurity.
There are two stages to installing solar panels. The mechanical setup, which involves mounting the PV panels and erecting the supporting structures, is the first stage.
The electrical setup, which comprises connecting the solar energy system and laying out the wiring, is the second stage.
As per reports, the combined solar energy production at the Jebel Ali Metro Depot, Al Qusais Metro Depot, and Al Sufouh Tram Depot is 3.165 MW, 3.804 MW, and 2.990 MW, respectively.
