Dubai has consistently affirmed its standing as both a cultural and economic powerhouse, not only within the Middle East but also on a global scale. As the city continues to flourish and magnetize individuals and events from all corners of the world, its role as a cosmopolitan haven remains unchallenged. In yet another display of its international prominence, Dubai has triumphed in its bid to host the prestigious World Cities Culture Summit (WCCS) in 2024.
First Ever Middle East Venue for the WCCS
Scheduled to take place from October 29 to November 1, 2024, this event signifies a historic moment as it marks the inaugural hosting of the summit in the Middle East and North Africa region. Established in 2012 by the Mayor of London, WCCS serves as a union of global cities that share a profound belief in the pivotal role of culture. This platform facilitates the exchange of knowledge and insights among policy-makers from influential cities, delving into the significance of culture and sustainable urban development in shaping their future prosperity.
Expanding Membership and the UAE’s Leadership Role
Commencing with participation from just eight cities, the summit has witnessed a remarkable expansion, boasting a membership that now includes 40 cities spanning six continents. Dubai itself joined this illustrious group in 2022, coinciding with the first in-person gathering of these 40+ cities in Helsinki since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Another noteworthy presence in the network is Abu Dhabi, underscoring the United Arab Emirates’ influential role in the region. The upcoming three-day summit in 2024 will operate under the banner of “exploring culture’s role in cities’ prosperity and laying the foundations for sustainable development.”
Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum’s Visionary Statement
Her Highness Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairperson of Dubai Culture and a member of the Dubai Council, emphatically declared, “Hosting the 2024 World Cities Culture Summit is a testament to the visionary aspirations of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to transform Dubai into a global center for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.”
As Dubai prepares to welcome the world’s cultural leaders, the anticipation for the 2024 WCCS is building, promising to further elevate the city’s global standing and reinforce its commitment to shaping a vibrant and culturally diverse future.
