In 2018, Daera, a Delhi-based interior and product design studio, emerged with a mission to tell thoughtful stories through objects and materials.
The studio, founded by Jannat Gill and Sharon Sethi, celebrates sustainable furniture designs, vibrant colors, and captivating textures, creating a unique blend of style and eco-consciousness.
Seeds of Passion and Opportunity Blossom
Daera’s genesis was marked by the convergence of Sharon and Jannat’s shared passion for colors and textures. A chance encounter during Jannat’s wedding in 2015 sparked the idea of venturing into the fashion space. Their friendship bloomed, setting the stage for a remarkable collaboration. The duo contemplated entering the fashion industry but found their true calling in interior and product design.
From Idea to Reality: The Birth of Daera
The wheels of destiny began turning in 2017 when Jannat’s redecorated home led to an influx of home decor inquiries. Recognizing the potential, she and Sharon embarked on a journey that gave rise to Daera. Today, the studio’s portfolio spans both interior spaces and furniture, offering a diverse range of designs that fuse opulence and comfort.
Canceled Plans: A Fusion of Minds and Ideals
In an unexpected twist of fate, the trio of Jannat, Sharon, and architect Mallika Reddy joined forces in a serendipitous encounter during a ceremony in Thailand. This convergence gave birth to the ‘Daera X Canceled Plans’ collection, defined by repurposing waste materials into exquisite furnishings. The collection mirrors the shared vision of three distinct minds.
Revolutionizing Waste: A Journey of Sustainability
Canceled Plans encapsulates a commitment to using the unused. Mallika Reddy, with a background in healthcare, harnessed her knowledge to curate fabrics from discarded materials. Rejects find new life through upholstery, transforming waste from industrial areas in Delhi and Hyderabad into stylish creations. The collaboration has repurposed 500 kg of waste, contributing to a circular economy.
Crafting a Brighter Future: The Design Process
The journey involves artisans from different corners of India, from Hyderabad’s CharMinar to Tamil Nadu’s Pochampally. Each piece is designed with minimalism and functionality inspired by the Bauhaus era. The final collection includes lounge chairs, warp chairs, shuttle benches, as well as chandeliers, pod lights, and oracle mirrors. These products epitomize Daera’s dedication to sustainability and style.
Waste Finds a Purpose: Daera’s Impact
Daera’s tale is one of transformation, where discarded materials evolve into distinctive pieces that bridge style and sustainability. As this trio of creatives breathes life into forgotten waste, a brighter and more environmentally conscious future is envisioned. The studio’s narrative serves as a reminder that innovation and conscious design can shape a better world.
