IIT Kharagpur, one of India’s premier engineering institutes, has announced its plans to align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 by introducing significant changes to its academic offerings. These include the launch of an MBBS programme at the BC Roy Institute of Medical Science and Technology, as well as dual degree programmes, expanded electives, and internship opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
IIT Kharagpur will introduce an MBBS programme in medicine at its BC Roy Institute of Medical Science and Technology. This move reflects the institute’s commitment to diversifying its academic portfolio and contributing to the healthcare sector in line with the NEP 2020. Additionally, the institute will offer a dual degree programme that allows students to pursue both BTech and MTech courses simultaneously, providing a comprehensive educational experience.
Expansion of Undergraduate and Graduate Curricula
The institute is set to introduce a four-year bachelor’s degree curriculum in science, further broadening the range of courses available to students. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students will have the opportunity to select from an expanded array of electives, fostering interdisciplinary learning and specialization according to individual interests and career goals.
Extended Research Internship Opportunities
IIT Kharagpur will modify its undergraduate courses, allowing students to opt for an eight-month research internship instead of the traditional eight-week summer internship. This enhancement aims to provide students with a more in-depth research experience and promote hands-on learning. Additionally, the option of internships for postgraduate programmes will be offered to enrich students’ practical knowledge and skill development.
In a bid to attract a diverse pool of talent, IIT Kharagpur is establishing an international student office and actively working towards increasing the admission of international students. This emphasis on internationalization aligns with the NEP 2020’s vision of global collaboration and exposure for students.
NEP 2020 Implementation in Andhra Pradesh Universities
Apart from IIT Kharagpur, various institutions and universities in Andhra Pradesh are also embracing the principles of the NEP 2020. Universities in the region are adopting transdisciplinary course frameworks and open curricula to foster holistic and well-rounded education. The emphasis on value-based education, community-focused projects, and industry-academia connections will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of education in the state.
