The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of Chandrayaan-3 at 2.35 PM IST on July 14. The mission aims to explore the South Pole of the moon and represents India’s commitment to advancing space exploration.

A Leading Figure in ISRO

At the forefront of this groundbreaking mission is Dr. Ritu Karidhal Srivastava, a senior Scientist at ISRO. Known as India’s “Rocket Woman,” Dr. Karidhal brings extensive expertise and leadership to the Chandrayaan-3 mission. Her remarkable contributions to previous missions, including Chandrayaan-2 and Mangalyaan, have earned her widespread recognition and admiration.

Hailing from Lucknow, India, Dr. Ritu Karidhal Srivastava’s passion for space exploration began at a young age. Her deep fascination with the cosmos led her to collect newspaper clippings about ISRO and NASA, nurturing her curiosity and driving her towards a career dedicated to unravelling the mysteries of the universe.

Dr. Karidhal’s academic journey laid the foundation for her success in the field. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in Physics from Lucknow University and further pursued a Master’s degree in Aerospace Engineering from the renowned Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Equipped with a solid educational background, she joined ISRO in 1997, marking the beginning of her extraordinary journey.

Dr. Ritu Karidhal Srivastava’s expertise and technical brilliance have played pivotal roles in shaping India’s space exploration achievements. As the Mission Director of Chandrayaan-2, she provided invaluable guidance and oversight, ensuring the mission’s objectives were met. Additionally, her contributions as the Deputy Operations Director of Mangalyaan, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission, contributed to India’s historic success in reaching Mars’ orbit.

Dr. Karidhal’s exceptional contributions have garnered numerous accolades. She has been honoured with the prestigious ISRO Young Scientist Award, presented by former President APJ Abdul Kalam, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to space research. She has also received the ISRO Team Award for MOM (2015) and the Women Achievers in Aerospace award from the Society of Indian Aerospace Technologies & Industries (SIATI).
