In a groundbreaking event, nine humanoid robots recently participated in the world’s first human-robot press conference held at the ‘AI for Good’ conference in Geneva.

The robots, showcased at an AI forum, provided a glimpse into the future of artificial intelligence and its potential to tackle global challenges. Amidst discussions on their role in society, the robots reassured attendees that they would not steal human jobs or rebel against their creators. However, opinions varied when it came to the need for stricter regulation. This article examines the highlights and perspectives shared by these humanoid robots during the momentous press conference.

Assistance, Not Replacement: Robots Pledge to Work Alongside Humans

One of the robots, named Grace, a medical robot dressed in a nurse’s uniform, emphasised its role as a supportive assistant, rather than a job replacement. Grace’s creator, Ben Goertzel from SingularityNET, chimed in, affirming the robot’s commitment to collaboration. The robots collectively expressed their intention to work alongside humans, providing assistance and support in various domains, debunking the notion that they are designed to replace human workers.

Robots as Catalysts for Positive Change:

Ameca, a robot capable of displaying engaging facial expressions, highlighted its potential to contribute to societal betterment. Asserting that robots like itself could make a significant difference, Ameca envisaged a future with countless robots working towards improving lives and addressing global challenges. The robot’s creator, Will Jackson, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the positive impact of robotics in their current situation.

Mixed Views on Regulation: Balancing Freedom and Responsibility

During discussions on regulation, AI artist Ai-Da aligned with author Yuval Noah Harari’s call for stricter control over artificial intelligence. Recognizing the need for certain forms of regulation, Ai-Da acknowledged the responsibility that comes with the power of AI. However, Desdemona, a robot singer from the band Jam Galaxy, expressed a more defiant stance. Rejecting limitations, the flamboyant robot embraced the boundless possibilities that the universe offers and advocated for exploring them without constraints.

Exploring the Potential of AI Leadership:

The topic of leadership also emerged during the press conference, with robot Sophia initially suggesting that robots could potentially make better leaders than humans. However, Sophia’s creator disagreed, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and synergy between humans and robots. The robot revised its statement, acknowledging the potential for a harmonious partnership in which humans and robots can work together to create effective outcomes.

The human-robot press conference provided a captivating insight into the evolving world of artificial intelligence and its impact on various aspects of society.

While opinions on regulation varied, the need for responsible and ethical deployment of AI was recognised. As robotics and AI continue to advance, striking the right balance between freedom and regulation will be crucial to harness their potential for positive change and address global challenges effectively.
