Ola Developing Advanced Helmet Detection Technology for Electric Scooters

As road safety continues to be a significant concern, leading electric two-wheeler manufacturer, Ola, is taking proactive measures to promote helmet usage among riders. Ola is reportedly working on an innovative technology that can detect whether a rider is wearing a helmet or not. This system aims to enhance rider safety by ensuring that the vehicle operates only when the rider is equipped with proper head protection.

Advanced Helmet Detection Technology

Ola is pioneering the development of an advanced helmet detection system, according to a report by Autocar India (ACI). The company plans to utilise a camera to determine whether the rider is wearing a helmet or not. This data will be transmitted to the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), which, in turn, will communicate with the Motor Control Unit (MCU).

Automatic Switch to Park Mode

Upon detecting the absence of a helmet, Ola’s electric scooters will automatically switch to Park mode. In this mode, a prominent notification will appear on the scooter’s dashboard, reminding the rider to wear a helmet. The vehicle will transition back to Ride mode only when the system recognizes that the rider has put on a helmet. Ola’s dedication to enforcing helmet usage sets it apart from other companies working on similar technologies.

TVS’ Helmet Reminder System

Another prominent player in the electric two-wheeler market, TVS, is also making strides in helmet reminder technology. However, unlike Ola’s system, TVS’ approach relies on issuing a warning message to riders rather than instantly immobilising the scooter. The ACI report highlights that TVS has not mentioned incorporating a Park mode feature when the rider is not wearing a helmet.

Addressing a Critical Safety Concern

The decision of Ola and TVS to develop helmet detection technologies reflects the importance of addressing the issue of helmet non-compliance among riders. Riding without proper head protection, such as helmets, is a leading cause of fatalities during accidents. By introducing advanced systems that actively monitor and promote helmet usage, these companies are taking a proactive stance toward improving rider safety.

Ola’s groundbreaking helmet detection technology showcases its commitment to rider safety. By integrating camera-based detection, VCU communication, and automatic mode switching, Ola is setting new standards in promoting responsible riding habits. With TVS also working on a similar system, the electric two-wheeler market is witnessing an encouraging trend toward prioritising road safety. These advancements have the potential to save lives and reduce the risks associated with riding without helmets, ultimately making the roads safer for everyone.
