Abu Dhabi’s Environment Agency (EAD) and Aldar Properties have joined forces in a sustainability initiative aimed at encouraging the recycling of single-use plastic bottles. The initiative involves the installation of ‘Big Zero’ recycling stations at popular locations throughout the capital, making it convenient for community members to dispose of their plastic bottles responsibly.
Placing ‘Big Zero’ Installations:
The ‘Big Zero’ recycling installations, first introduced during the Abu Dhabi Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (ADIHEX) last year, will be strategically placed at eight high footfall locations within the Aldar portfolio. These locations include Yas Mall, Gate and Arc Towers on Reem Island, Al Muneera, Al Zeina, Yas Acres, and Aldar Education’s Al Yasmina, Al Bateen, and Al Mamoura Academies.
Awareness Campaign and Partnership:
EAD and Aldar plan to launch an awareness campaign on social media to inform the public about the locations of the ‘Big Zero’ installations. Aldar has been a strong supporter of EAD’s Mission to Zero campaign, which aims to achieve zero single-use plastic, zero waste, zero emissions, and zero harm to biodiversity in Abu Dhabi. The partnership with Aldar further demonstrates their commitment to environmental sustainability.
Recycling Progress and Collaboration:
EAD’s partnerships with the private sector, including Aldar, have proven highly successful in promoting environmental campaigns. By placing the ‘Big Zero’ installations at their projects, Aldar will collect the single-use plastic bottles deposited by visitors and residents and ensure their proper recycling. This collaboration brings Abu Dhabi closer to its goal of eliminating single-use plastic waste.
Commitment to Biodiversity:
Aldar emphasises its dedication to protecting the UAE’s rich biodiversity through its partnership with EAD. The real estate developer’s widespread presence across Abu Dhabi allows it to actively participate in the ‘Big Zero’ initiative and EAD’s wider Mission to Zero campaign. This collaboration aligns with Aldar’s recently announced Net Zero by 2050 plan and its ongoing efforts to enhance the well-being of the communities it serves.
Success of Mission to Zero:
EAD’s Mission to Zero program encompasses various initiatives, such as the ‘Pile it Up’ school challenge, SMS campaigns, outdoor advertising, government challenges, and the ‘Big Zero’ installations. To date, the installations have already facilitated the collection of approximately 1,500kg of single-use plastic bottles across Abu Dhabi, marking significant progress towards achieving the mission’s objectives.
The partnership between EAD and Aldar in the ‘Big Zero’ recycling initiative signifies their shared commitment to sustainability and reducing single-use plastic waste. By placing recycling stations at prominent locations and raising awareness, they aim to foster a culture of recycling among residents and visitors, contributing to a cleaner and more environmentally conscious Abu Dhabi.
