Axiom Space’s Ax-2 mission will see Rayyanah Barnawi make history as the first Arab woman astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) on May 21. Axiom Space’s second all-private astronaut mission to ISS to be led by Houston-based space technology company.

Saudi Arabia’s Rayyanah Barnawi is set to make history as she embarks on an extraordinary mission to the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday, May 21. This landmark achievement is part of the private Ax-2 mission, led by Axiom Space, a prominent Houston-based space technology company.

A Historic Milestone:

Rayyanah Barnawi’s inclusion in the Ax-2 mission signifies a significant milestone for Arab women and the field of space exploration. As the first Arab woman astronaut, she symbolises progress in gender equality and represents the aspirations and dreams of the people in Saudi Arabia and the broader region.

A Diverse Crew and Mission Specialists:

Accompanying Barnawi on this historic journey are Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut leading the mission, John Shoffner as the pilot, and Ali Aqarni, Barnawi’s compatriot and mission specialist. With their diverse expertise, the crew is well-equipped to tackle the challenges of the Ax-2 mission.

Barnawi’s Career and Scientific Focus:

Rayyanah Barnawi, a biomedical researcher, brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the mission. With a Master of Biomedical Sciences degree from Alfaisal University and a Bachelor of Biomedical Sciences degree from Otago University, Barnawi’s expertise in cancer stem-cell research will be invaluable during the mission. Her primary focus will be on stem cell and breast cancer research, contributing to scientific advancements in these fields.

Passion for Adventure:

In addition to her professional achievements, Barnawi’s adventurous spirit and love for outdoor activities make her an exceptional candidate for space missions. From scuba diving in Saudi Arabia and Indonesia to hang gliding, ledge swinging in New Zealand, and hiking and rafting in Turkey, her diverse experiences have prepared her for the challenges and wonders of space exploration.

Rayyanah Barnawi’s journey to the International Space Station represents a significant breakthrough for Arab women in space exploration.
