Maruti Suzuki’s highly anticipated off-roader, the Jimny, is set to go on sale starting from June 7. In an interesting development, the Indian armed forces have expressed their interest in the vehicle and are considering its operational use, according to a report by HT Auto.
Shashank Srivastava, a senior executive director at Maruti Suzuki, confirmed the armed forces’ interest and mentioned that discussions will progress once the Jimny is officially launched. Maruti Suzuki is currently assessing the armed forces’ specific requirements and specifications, indicating a potential deal in the future. It is worth noting that Maruti Suzuki’s previous model, the Gypsy, had a strong presence in the armed forces.
As the launch date draws near, new details about the Jimny are emerging. One notable update is that the Jimny will only be available in a four-wheel drive version, dispelling rumors of a more economical two-wheel drive variant. Maruti Suzuki is committed to preserving the Jimny’s reputation as a rugged off-roader, similar to its predecessor.
The original Jimny was introduced in 1970 and has since established itself as a reliable off-road vehicle. The Jimny’s lineage aligns with the Gypsy’s heritage, maintaining its robust construction and impressive off-road capabilities. While the global market primarily offers a three-door version of the Jimny, Maruti Suzuki has specially developed a five-door variant with the Indian market in mind.
The Gypsy, known for its lightweight build, short-wheelbase, and refined petrol engine, was highly regarded by the Indian armed forces and police units. Its adaptability and performance made it a preferred choice for various operations.
With the upcoming launch of the Jimny and the expressed interest from the Indian armed forces, Maruti Suzuki is poised to continue its legacy of providing reliable and capable vehicles for both civilian and military purposes.
