Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently shared on Twitter that he earns about ₹80 lakh ($107,000) per month from his 24,700 subscribers on the social media platform. He disclosed this by posting a screenshot of the number of people who pay $4 (around ₹330) per month to subscribe to his exclusive content. Musk is generating income by providing Super Followers with access to some unique content.
Twitter users who are able to offer quality content to their subscribers can also make money, just like Musk does. He explained in a screenshot how users can earn money from Twitter by using the monetization option on the platform. “Content creators may wish to enable subscriptions on this platform. Just tap on Monetization in settings,” he wrote.
At present, the monetisation feature is limited to users in the US, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, EU, UK, and EEA. However, people from any region can choose to subscribe. Users can access the feature by selecting the profile icon on the top left corner of their Twitter app, tapping on “Professional Tools” at the bottom of the screen, and then clicking on “Subscriptions”.
Musk is the most followed person on Twitter with 136.6 million followers. His Super Followers have access to his discussions hosted on Spaces, which is Twitter’s audio-chat feature, and they will also be privy to an ‘ask me anything’ session.
Since Twitter was acquired by Musk last year, the social media platform has been experimenting with various monetization strategies, including charging for verification and API access. Recently, the company informed advertisers that those who wish to advertise on Twitter are required to pay for verification or reach a minimum monthly spend on ads.
Musk’s Twitter earnings highlight the potential for content creators to generate income on social media platforms by offering unique and high-quality content. Twitter’s monetization feature is another way for content creators to make money through their presence on the platform.
