A restaurant in New York sells grilled cheese sandwiches for – hold your breath – $214 per piece, the most expensive for a sandwich according to Guinness World Records. One of the sandwich’s primary components appears to be gold flakes. In addition, the cheese used in the sandwich costs close to $100 per kilogram. Customers are usually required to place an order for it 48 hours in advance.
CNBC Make It noted that the restaurant utilized rare caciocavallo podolico cheese in its description of cheese. It’s pricey because only 25,000 cows’ milk is required to manufacture it, and the cows only lactate for two months a year. “When we receive an inquiry, we reach out to our sources right away and see if we can have these ingredients flown in,” Serendipity3 creative director Joe Calderone told CNBC Make It. “We have our baker on board to bake the loaf, so we can get the wheels in motion right away.” The “Quintessential Grilled Cheese” sandwich is created with Dom Perignon champagne and grilled with gold flakes on made-to-order French bread.
“The gold leaf doesn’t add anything in terms of flavour, but it’s a fun, over-the-top novelty addition at a restaurant where everything from the menu to the décor is over-the-top,” said Nicolas Vega of CNBC Make It, who tested it. He claimed the bread is good, but the cheese is the star of the show. “Caciocavallo podolico tastes like a cross between parmesan and manchego, but it melts like a Munster.” “It makes perfect sense as the cheese of choice for the most expensive grilled cheese money can buy,” he says. Vega remarked that it’s still a lot of money for a grilled cheese sandwich.
