Dubai embraces the future of transportation with a new vertiport for electric flying taxis near DXB airport, set to take off by 2026.

Flying taxis in Dubai will take off by 2026, with plans for the vertiports already authorised. Foster + Partners collaborated with Skyports Infrastructure to build the Skyports Infrastructure Vertiport terminal for electric flying taxis, which is located near to Dubai International Airport (DXB).

Following the unveiling of the terminal during the World Government Summit 2023, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai, approved the terminal’s concept design.

The DXB vertiport is one of four potential locations for an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) infrastructure network being considered by Skyports Infrastructure and the emirate’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

“We are delighted to have developed a vertiport concept for the emerging AAM industry, which will transform the way people travel in Dubai,” said David Summerfield, Head of Studio at Foster + Partners. The ideal vertiport connects with Dubai International Airport and the Dubai Metro to give international and local travelers smooth, sustainable mobility around the city.” The vertiport will link the emirate’s most popular locations with a high-speed, zero-emissions network that will connect to current transit hubs. This comprises the RTA Dubai metro lines as well as DXB.

The planned terminal is built on a raised deck to allow for easier aircraft take-off and landing. The structure wraps around the airfield, linking the arrival and departure lounges and providing breathtaking views of the planes and the city beyond. The overhanging roof and slant of the façade shield the structure from direct sunshine and avoid overheating. The architecture of the building is bordered by lush landscaping and is lined with the neighboring metro station. To create a comfortable and quiet setting, the interior rooms are created with a refined palette of warm, natural materials. By 2026, the RTA and Skyports Infrastructure want to build a network of vertiports for air taxi services.
