Vande Metro & Vande Bharat’s New Sleeper to Revolutionize Indian Railways.
By the end of this year, the Railway Ministry intends to introduce a short-distance variation of the indigenous Vande Bharat trains. “Vande Metro is being built with the idea that trains can run at a very high frequency, say four or five times a day, in cities with distances of less than 100 kilometers, making it very comfortable and affordable.” The train would be ready by December, according to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, according to news agency ANI.
According to the minister, the Vande Metro trains would relieve demand on the suburban rail network. According to him, the intention to launch Vande Metro is based on the reaction garnered by Vande Bharat trains.
Vande Metro trains are a component of the government’s initiatives to upgrade the suburban railway network. The Indian Railways now serves high-demand, short-distance routes (about 100 km one way) via suburban services. Popular routes include those that circle Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai. There are also suburban services in Lucknow-Kanpur, Pune, Hyderabad, Barabanki-Lucknow, and Pernem-Karwar (Goa). Vande Bharat trains may achieve peak speeds of more than 160 kilometers per hour.
Vande Bharat sleeper trains will also be implemented in the near future. In one of the largest Railway tenders for manufacturing-cum-maintenance of Vande Bharat Trains, a consortium of BHEL and Titagarh Waggons won the order for delivery of 80 sleeper class Vande Bharat Trains. The collaboration will also provide complete railway maintenance for the next 35 years.
Orders for 80 trains have been placed at a cost of Rs.120 crore for each train, minus taxes and charges. The trains will be delivered over a 72-month period by a partnership led by BHEL.
