Kerala has taken a significant step towards contributing significantly to medical research and healthcare by launching the Genome Data Center and Microbiome Center of Excellence under K-DISC (Kerala Development and Innovation Strategy Council).
At the K-Disc Innovation Day in Thiruvananthapuram, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan officially launched the projects for the Kerala Genome Data Center and Microbiome Center of Excellence.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan pointed out that the projects of Kerala Genome Data Centre and Microbiome Center of Excellence conceived by K-Disc will pave the way for enormous advancement in the health sector of Kerala.
A new therapeutic approach, illness prevention, and therapy are all made possible by the science of genomics. The use of genomics will advance current medical research and practice strategies and aid in the prediction of new treatment modalities.
The new center will aid in boosting primary sector production, creating fresh medicinal products, and giving vital data to biotech and research organizations. By establishing the Kerala Genome Data Centre, the state will be able to use genetic data analysis to significantly impact the domains of health, agriculture, and animal husbandry.
By the new initiative, Kerala would be able to pave the path for innovation in several sectors such as health care, agriculture and environmental science. The center’s initial efforts will be concentrated on the genes of plants, animals, and microbes. The project, which is anticipated to cost Rs 500 crore over five years, has been granted Rs 50 crore as the initial phase.
The microbiome is a topic of research that is pursued globally. Growing issues with aging and disease can be addressed by the microbiome. Health advancements are being driven by a sizable corpus of information called microbiome research. The microbiome industry is creating new prospects in the industrial sector as well.A Center of Microbiome Excellence is being established by the government in recognition of its significance. According to the Chief Minister, Kerala’s health sector will be strengthened by the microbiome center of excellence.
The Chief Minister also disclosed the availability of the GST Department’s Citizen Satisfaction Survey. Also, the Chief Minister gave prizes to the One Department One Idea programme winners.
