- Former Union Commerce Secretary and retired bureaucrat BVR Subrahmanyam has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of Niti Aayog.
Subrahmanyam will succeed Parameswaran lyer, who will move to the United States after being appointed as Executive Director of the World Bank headquarters, Washington DC, USA. According to an official communique, the Appointments Committee has greenlit Subrahmanyam’s posting for a period of two years from the date on which he assumed charges. Meanwhile, Iyer will be replacing Rajesh Khullar – a 1988 batch IAS officer who has been repatriated to his cadre state Haryana.
Subrahmanyam is a 1987 batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre who served as the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir when the State was bifurcated into two Union Territories in 2019 before being moved to the Ministry of Commerce as Secretary in 2021. A seasoned IAS officer, he has also worked in Manmohan Singh’s office as Joint Secretary. Hailing from Andhra Pradesh, Subrahmanyam holds an Engineering Degree as well as a Management Degree from the London Business School.

The 56-year-old officer served as Private Secretary to then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from 2004 to 2008. After a stint with the World Bank, he again joined the Prime Minister’s Office in 2012. He continued in the Narendra Modi PMO for close to a year before moving back to his cadre State—until he was called to lead the bureaucracy in J&K.
In addition to the NITI Aayog hiring, the Government also appointed Rajesh Rai as Chairman & Managing Director (CMD) of ITI Limited, a PSU under the Department of Telecommunications (DoT).
