Indian Railways will renovate the Delhi Railway Station with
modern amenities.Delhi Junction (Old Delhi Railway Station) will be transformed into a cutting-edge facility with many modern amenities, including luxurious sleeping areas for passengers in the near future. Ronald MacDonald Stevens[U2], who founded the East India Railway Company in 1854, had the idea for the Delhi railway station. The modest Old Delhi Railway Station opened in 1864. However, it took nearly ten years to make it available to the general public.
Northern Railway’s General Manager stated that they have spent approximately Rs. 20crore on station redevelopment in the past few years. Renovated ticket counters, a temporary roof with LED lights in the main hall, and battery-powered golf carts that can be hired to travel between platforms have all been installed.
According to Indian Railways, efforts will be made to improve conditions at Old Delhi Station as part of the Amrit Bharat Station Plan. The focus will be on improving station accessibility, providing free Wi-Fi, enhancing convenience facilities such as waiting rooms and restrooms, improving the passenger information system, upgrading the business lounge, removing unnecessary buildings around stations, and expanding roads to secure pedestrian paths along with a well-planned parking.
Luxury sleeping pods will soon be available at Delhi Junction, according to recent information provided by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). In the sleeping area, there will be drinking water, sockets for charging mobile phones and electronic devices, changing rooms, internet, and luxurious bathrooms. A single line will connect New Delhi and Old Delhi railway stations in the future and passengers can then travel from one station to another in 15 minutes.
The first train arrived at Old Delhi station on January 1, 1867, following the completion of the iron bridge over the Yamuna. The historic iron bridge in Delhi dates back to a time when trains were powered by steam engines.
