The Reserve Bank of India has decided to allow all inbound visitors to use UPI
payments for merchant payments while in India. This service will initially be
available to G20 travellers arriving at select international airports, according to RBI
Governor Shaktikanta Das.
According to Rajsri Rengan, Head of Banking and Payments, India and
Philippines, FIS, the RBI’s announcement about extending UPI facility for inbound
travellers to India is a great initiative, and customers visiting India will now be able
to use UPI while conducting P2M transactions. This is a fantastic move to
promote the use of digital payments in India while also enhancing their payment
experience.
Recently, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) with international mobile numbers linked to
their NRE/NRO accounts were granted UPI access. The service will soon be
available to all inbound visitors, beginning with those from G20 countries.
According to the RBI’s “Statement on Developmental and Regulatory Policies,” the
UPI payment facility will be available for merchant payments by G20 travellers.
The service will initially be available at a few international airports. It will later be
enabled at all other entry points throughout the country.
Allowing UPI access to travellers from G20 countries, according to Anup Nayar,
CEO, Domestic – In-Solutions Global Ltd., will simplify the payment process for
foreign tourists when they make merchant payments after arriving in India.
Travelers [U1]will appreciate the facility because it eliminates the need to carry
cash and reduces reliance on an international debit card. In recent years, UPI has
grown in popularity for retail digital payments in India. The move will help to
strengthen India’s digital payment alliance with its partner countries.
