While new brands and luxury automakers have been selling electric vehicles for some time, India’s largest carmaker, Hyundai, has entered the game with the Ioniq 5.
Egg-shaped cabins are being used in electric vehicles to achieve a low aerodynamic drag coefficient. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 follows this rule with straight lines and sharp creases. So much so that we can bet designers only used a scale to carve out the Ioniq 5’s bodywork except for the wheels and wheel arches.
The Ioniq 5 is inspired by the company’s first passenger vehicle, Pony. As a result, the retro-ness is an appealing feature.
The Ioniq 5 is the most expensive Hyundai car available in India today, priced at Rs 44.95 lakh and showcasing a range of 631 kilometres on a full charge. It is also designed from the ground up to be an electric vehicle. The real-world range is more than 500 kilometres, and the 350 kW fast charging capabilities are simply astounding. As a result, it is one of the best premium electric cars in India, period.
Following a string of recent industry honours, Hyundai Motor Co.’s all-electric IONIQ 5 crossover has been named World Car of the Year, the latest indication that the top South Korean automaker is leading the pack in electrification.

The IONIQ 5, the first model in Hyundai’s dedicated battery electric vehicle (BEV) line-up, was also honoured by the World Car Awards (WCA), beating out sister brand Kia Corp.’s EV6 and Ford Motor’s Mustang March-E. The one-of-a-kind model (E-GMP) features 800-volt, ultra-fast charging, with an 80% charge from empty possible in just 18 minutes!
The Korean Automaker intends to launch 17 new BEV models by 2030, including Genesis luxury brand vehicles, with the goal of increasing annual global BEV sales to 1.87 million units by 2030.
Hyundai announced plans to invest Rs 4,000 crore in around six electric vehicles in India by 2028 in December 2021. Over the next few years, the company intends to release a mix of models from its existing line-up as well as completely new vehicles based on its global platform E-GMP. Its battery electric vehicle line-up will cater to multiple segments in India, including the mass market and mass premium segments.
