In fact, he is India’s largest mango exporter. Let us have a look at the story behind this massive mango farm.
The year was 1997. His crude oil refinery at Jamnagar in Gujarat was facing pollution complaints. Protests against Reliance Industries were at their peak and the pollution Control Boards issued warnings. The management of reliance industries had no choice but to find a solution.
The entrepreneur Mukesh Ambani saw an opportunity in this crisis. Close to the refinery, Reliance industries set up a mango orchard to control pollution levels in the area. They planted about 1.3 lakh mango trees on 600 acres of land. There were more than 200 varieties of mangoes. To bring clean water to the orchard, Reliance industries set up a desalination plant. This has gradually reduced the pollution in the region.
Named ‘Dhirubhai Ambani Lakkibak Amrai’ in memory of reliance industries founder Dhirubhai Ambani, mangoes from this orchard are sold in India and worldwide. About 600 tonnes of mangoes are harvested from this land per year.
