ARYA, a climate infrastructure platform centred on sustainable biofuels and industrial decarbonization initiatives, has been introduced by GPS Renewables(GPSR), a bioenergy technology company with Bengaluru headquarters. Arya was established with the goal of assisting India in achieving its Net Zero target. GPS Renewables will serve as the execution partner for Arya’s incubation, development, and operation of climate-positive projects.
Despite having low per-capita emissions, India is the third-largest producer of carbon dioxide globally. According to a McKinsey Sustainability report, the majority (about 70%) of these emissions are attributable to six industries: electricity, steel, automobile, aviation, cement, and agriculture. India committed to get 50% of its energy from non-fossil sources at COP26 and set a target of becoming Net Zero by 2070. Environmental projects need to be prioritised and expedited in order to achieve this goal.
Projects focusing on managing stubble by using it as biofuel will also receive priority attention from GPSR Arya. 27 million tonnes of paddy straw are produced annually in Punjab and Haryana, 75% of which is not basmati. The main cause of stubble burning is the silica content of the bulk of straw, which makes it unsuitable for cow feed. Burning stubble has been a major contributor to air pollution in Delhi and the neighbouring areas for a number of years. The burning of stubble will be decreased and its use as a valuable resource will be encouraged if non-basmati paddy straw is used as a source for biofuel.
