In the digital world, Padma Sankar, a native of Tamil Nadu, is known as ‘Padhu Sankar.’ She is known for her homemade soaps, detergents, and sustainable living tips. Her website ‘Padhuskitchen’ speaks of cooking, recipes, a healthy lifestyle etc… On YouTube, she has 1,25,000 subscribers.

What inspired Padma to turn to sustainable living?

It is the demise of her grandmother and father that encouraged Padma to turn to this. She lost both of them to cancer. Why cancer is so prevalent? She thought.

After research, Padma realised that present-day life choices are one of the reasons for it. Environmental pollution and long-term exposure to chemicals in everyday products were the major reasons. As a way to counter it, Padma decided to switch from regular toilet cleaners, detergents, and dishwashing liquids to natural alternatives. Not only soaps, but she also changed her entire lifestyle.

Later, she started sharing her recipes, tips and tricks on her website and other digital media platforms for all. Among them, soapnuts became everyone’s favourite. In Ayurveda, the shells of the soapberry nuts are known for their cleansing properties. It is said to provide relief to people with itching or dry skin. On her website, Padma shows how to make products such as laundry detergent and dishwashing liquid using soapnuts. They are non-toxic and use less water. On her website, she provides step-by-step details of the products that can be made using soapnuts.
