Billionaire Jeff Bezos, the creator of Amazon, said in an interview that philanthropy is “hard labour” and that he plans to donate most of his $124 billion wealth to organisations that combat climate change.
Bezos stated that he and his partner Lauren Sánchez, a former journalist who is now a philanthropist, were “developing the capacity to be able to give away this money.”
He did not, however, say how much money he would donate or to which charities, according to Daily Mail. He did state that he wants to back individuals who “can unite humanity and mend profound social and political divisions.”
Bezos has already pledged $10 billion through the “Bezos Earth Fund” to combat climate change and preserve the environment, but he has drawn criticism for declining to sign the Giving Pledge. Hundreds of the richest people in the world have agreed to donate the majority of their money to charity as part of the pledge.
Additionally, the billionaire recently gave $100 million to philanthropist and country music icon Dolly Parton as part of the “Bezos Courage & Civility Award.” Bezos claims that the honour and medal are given to and given to leaders that “pursue answers with courage and respect.”
