A treasure trove of handcrafted sarees might be found in your Mother’s or Grandmother’s clothing.

LataSita creates sustainable fashion from used sarees and fabrics collected from Durga Puja pandals

These vintage items are unmatched in terms of fabric and craftsmanship. Meghna Nayak, a freelance journalist from Kolkata, came to this realization a decade earlier when she saw her mother going through her wardrobe.

Meghna struck an idea, and as a result ‘LataSita‘ was born.

The design studio upcycles used sarees in an effort to generate “zero-waste” and “ethically created” “classic” clothing for women while also preserving the nation’s textile heritage.

Meghna took small efforts between 2012 and 2015 to establish a solid foundation for her company. To support herself, she was also working as a freelance Environmental Journalist.

Two collections—pret and custom—are available from LataSita.

Kilograms of sarees from wholesale marketplaces, women’s wardrobes, Durga Puja pandals, dead stock from weavers, and wholesale markets went into the creation of the pret collection. The “Send Us Your Saree” campaign helped to produce the bespoke collection. Customers are encouraged by the promotion to have their sarees made into personalised items.

Every month, LataSita receives 30–40 orders. The studio produces 750 outfits annually for the pret collection, which is mostly intended for shows. Besides Taiwan, England, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Germany, Sweden, Belgium, and the Netherlands, Meghna has also travelled with her clothing to exhibit in those countries.

LataSita’s clothing might cost anything from Rs.2,500 to Rs.25,000. The best-selling items fall into the Rs.3,000 to Rs.8,000 price category.
