Sisters Kamakshi and Vishala Khurana’s startup ‘The Sound Space’ puts this idea into practice through its music-linked modules and workshops. The carefully-crafted programmes are designed for both adults and children and aim to achieve inner balance and healing.
The sisters are trained in both music and psychology.
The Khurana sisters say they grew up in a home filled with music. Their father was a trained musician and sound healer. They were initiated into the world of music at the age of three. As they grew up, they realised that music is a gift that should be shared with everyone. This thought encouraged them to start ‘The Sound Space’ in 2010. The Mumbai-based platform grew organically and works extensively with NGOs, care centres, schools, and corporates.
The duo widened the horizon of music so that everyone can experience its therapeutic side. In their opinion, music is the best companion one can have, and listening to music can be really helpful. At The Sound Space, they have music curated to meet the specific needs of people. For example, the platform has music that resonates with cancer patients.
The sisters are trained in both music and psychology. So, they know music’s impact on mental health and wellbeing. They follow the Raga-Chikitsa which is based on the idea that every raga has an effect on the body and mind. Their modules and workshops also consider chakras or energy centres that balance the human body. They say the effect of music on people became more evident during the covid time when people started picking up instruments. The Sound Space intends to spread music to people belonging to all strata of society.
The sisters are planning more programmes across the country. Their dream is to reach out to so many people as there.
