The Indian government has decided to allow the work-from-home facility in special economic zones (SEZ). Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal has announced it adding that it would create more job opportunities in small cities and raise exports of services.

The ministry has received requests from many quarters to allow work from home. In July 2022, the Commerce Ministry allowed work from home in SEZs for a maximum period of one year. It could be extended to 50 per cent of the total number of employees.

The new rules will let  IT/ITes sector employees in SEZ units, especially those who are temporarily incapacitated, in transit or working offsite opt for the work-from-home option.

As per the notification issued by the Commerce Ministry, there has been a great demand for creating a country-wide uniform work-from-home (WFH) policy across SEZs. The SEZ units will provide equipment and connectivity for WFH.
