American electric car maker Tesla has lost three senior executives at its India office.
The company has lost three members of its original 12-strong team since the resignation of Country Policy Head Manoj Khurana in June.
These exits signal a waning interest in the Indian market. However, the company has not yet abandoned its office and legal entity. The company will be incorporated in Bangalore on January 8, 2021 and plans to launch vehicles within six months.
Tesla’s plans for India have been hit by the government’s stance on electric vehicle (EV) import tariffs. India currently imposes a 60% tariff on electric vehicles priced under $40,000. Applying these taxes, even Tesla’s cheapest Model 3 will cost between Rs 60,000 and 70,000, while premium models like Model S and Model X will cost over Rs 1.5 crore.
