The government to propose the Registration of Press and Periodicals Bill, 2019. The new bill will also cover the digital news media industry. Now, digital media is not included in the Centre’s registration framework. The government will soon propose the bill before the cabinet. It will replace the Press and Registration of Books Act, 1867. This pertains to the newspaper and printing press industry in India. The 2019 bill also will free up the book publishing industry. The draft also proposes to decriminalise and simplify the registration process.
