According to a report by Nasscom and Boston Consulting Group, 65% of techies prefer to shift to tier 2 or tier 3 cities to save money. About 80% of the workforce prefer hybrid working model.

The reason? It is a big relief to the inflation-affected Indians. It allows them to save more money.

The cost of living is less in tier 2 and tier 3 cities. For instance, the cost of living in Surat is 50% lower than Mumbai. The cost of living in Kochi is 30% lower than in Chennai, says the report ‘Shaping the Future of Work in India’s Tech Industry.’

A major chunk of IT talents hails from tier 2 and tier 3 cities. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they shifted their base to hometowns. Now, they prefer hybrid work model that also allows remote working. They want to be in office only for two to three days. The remianing days, they want to work from home. Also, majority, especially parents and caregivers, prefer a 5+3 work model instead of working for eight hours straight.

And, considering these changes, organisations are redesigning their work structure and culture. The report says most of them would choose the hybrid work model to sustain the workforce.
