Ghazal Alagh, co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer of Mamaearth, started her company from a personal experience. She and her husband Varun Alagh could not find products to treat their son’s skin condition as the products contained toxins. This inspired the couple to start Mamaearth in 2016 which claims to sell chemical-free products. In 2021, Mamaearth entered the unicorn club.
Born on September 2, 1988, Ghazal Alagh completed her schooling at Gurgaon, Haryana. A Bachelor of Computer Applications, she also holds a degree in Fine Arts from the New York Academy of Arts. Ghazal worked as a corporate trainer for two years. Then, she started her first startup called diettexpert.in which did not become successful. Her second venture was ‘Being Artsy’, an art studio where young kids can explore their creativity. Later, she started Mamaearth along with her husband who resigned from his corporate job to support her.
When they studied Indian products, they discovered that a lot of toxins used in India are banned outside the country as they were harmful to a baby’s skin. Investing 90 lakhs, which includes their savings and angel investors, they started Mamaearth to create natural and toxic-free products for young infants. Initially, it sold six products which included lotions, creams, shampoos, body wash, oils, and diapers. Now, it sells more than 100 products in baby care, skincare, and hair care categories.

Mamaearth has served around five million customers in over 500 cities. The company has around 400 people. She is responsible for product development and managing the community. Ghazal has a net worth of $17 million and her annual income from the Mamaearth is over INR 35 crores. Ghazal Alagh is also among the top 10 women artists in India.
