Alexander Wang co-founded Scale AI in 2016 when he was merely 19 years old. Back then, the company had only three employees. Although people around him considered the venture a joke, his work paid off. Now, Scale AI has 300 employees. The company is worth $3.5 billion and is one of the biggest AI companies in Silicon Valley. Wang, who currently serves as the CEO of Scale AI says, the company intends to make AI accessible for all.
The idea of Scale AI happened to Wang during his MIT days. Machine Learning and AI were exciting technologies among students on the campus, but nobody was doing anything substantial in that area. Experiments were happening in every other field except AI. This made Wang think. When he dug deeper, he realised that data was the bottleneck. It required a lot of time and resources to add intelligence to data. This inspired him to start Scale AI.
What does Scale AI do? Wang says it empowers companies with quality data. It works as a partner with its clients. Scale AI finds this the best way to sustain as a company. “We basically empower their AI with good data,” says Wang adding that the quality of data plays a crucial role in the performance of AI. If the data is garbage, the outcome will also be the same. This is where Scale AI works.
Wang believes platforms like Scale AI will eventually make the tech accessible for everyone. He is sure that AI will take over many aspects of life in the future. Keeping that in mind, he has set Scale’s goal as to build a complete data infrastructure platform for its customers.
