The Digital University of Kerala (DUK), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the World Health Organization (WHO) together will organise a two-week knowledge workshop on the topic ‘integration of digital technologies in disaster preparedness’ from May 16 to 27. The workshop aims to address the digital gap that hinders the broad application of digital technologies in dealing with disasters.
Although digital technologies are being used across all walks of human life, the potential of modern technologies is underexploited in disaster management and disaster risk reduction. According to UNEP, the workshop intends to equip government officials, students or anyone who is interested in the use of modern technologies for disaster management with required information so that they can make an informed decision. The audience will learn the complexities of digital technologies, especially artificial intelligence.
The major focus will be on learning aiding response and recovery, visual perspective of disasters, robots and drones to the rescue, speech as an aid, emergency networking through trial and error etc…
The workshop, funded by the British Council’s ‘going global partnerships exploratory grant’, is part of an ongoing collaboration of Dr Sinnu Susan Thomas, assistant professor, DUK, and Dr Edilson F. Arruda, lecturer, University of Southampton, UK.
