Startups exclusive for organic milk
India is one of the largest milk producing countries in the world. It accounts for about 22% of global milk production. However, about 68.7 percent of milk and dairy products sold in the country do not meet the standards of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. Adulteration of milk has been a problem in the country for a long time. Recently, many startups have come up with solutions to the problem of milk quality and adulteration. Many of these startups focus not only on unadulterated milk, but also on organic feed for livestock. Here are some organic milk startups
Happy Milk
Happy Milk was founded in December 2017 by Mehl Kejriwal. At present, Happy Milk operates on the outskirts of Bengaluru with about 400 cows. The operations at Happy Milk Farm were designed in collaboration with the German technology company GIA. On Happy Milk Farms, fodder is grown organically. Cows have detailed diet charts that contain about 11 nutrients. This helps to ensure good quality milk.
The Milk India Company
Founded by Shilpi Sinha in 2018, Milk India Company supplies raw and unpasteurized milk. The startup started with an initial investment of Rs 11,000. The Milk India Company delivers milk to the customer’s doorstep in glass bottles every morning. Milk is being distributed to 600 families in Bangalore. The startup claims to provide pure cow’s milk.
Matratva Dairy
Ankita Kumawat, an alumnus of IIM-Kolkata, quit her corporate job in the US in 2014 and started Dairy Farming. The Startup operating in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan procure milk from native cow breeds such as Gir, Sahiwal, Tara Parker and Rati. Milk storage relies more on traditional methods than machines. The startup also makes ghee, butter and sweets. These are sold under the Gorathan product brand. The products are also available on platforms like Amazon and BigBasket.
Klimom
Klimom is a brand that delivers fresh milk from the farm to the home. Founded by Allola Divya Reddy, an engineering graduate, the startup specializes in Gir cow milk. The farms are located at Sangareddy in Hyderabad. When Divya decided not to give adulterated milk to her children and decided to start a dairy farm of her own, in 2015 it turned into Klimom Wellness & Farm. By-products include rasgulla, gulab jamun, shrikhand and basundi.
Milk Mantra
Milk Mantra is an Odisha-based agricultural dairy startup. Founded in August 2009 by Sreekumar Mishra, former director of Tetley. Launched in 2012, Milk Mantra aims to address the milk shortage in Odisha. Milk Mantra Produces and distributes milk and milk based products such as whey, cheese and yogurt. Startup sells delicious milkshakes and ready-to-drink healthy milk drinks under the brands Milky Moo and Mooshake.
