Union minister Nitin Gadkari has said the cost of electric vehicles will drop to that of petrol vehicles in two years. Already the GST on Electric vehicles is only 5% and the cost of lithium-ion batteries is also declining.

Besides, the government has framed a policy allowing petrol pumps to set up EV charging stations. “In two years, there will be a lot of charging points across India. As electric mobility is gaining momentum in India, no artificial push is required,” Gadkari said.

“The per kilometre cost of the petrol-based vehicle is Rs 10, that of diesel is Rs7/km. For electric vehicles, it is Rs 1/km,” he added.
