When a popular social media platform like Facebook changes its name, will its fans and critics stay silent? Soon after Facebook announced its new name, ‘Meta’ became the most searched news on Google and the popular hashtag on Twitter. Here are some of the interesting comments that came after Mark Zuckerberg, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, announced the name change.
“Meta”- “Mark Evading True Accountability”, — coverup the truth, was the reaction of the writer and messaging guru Rick Horowitz.
US Democratic leader Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who had earlier criticised Zuckerberg in the US Congress, said that even if the company changes its name, it remains cancer to democracy.
Another tweet said, “How can you tell anyone that you’re on Meta? Sounds like a drug.”
Parallel to Zuckerberg’s live streaming where he announced the name change, an American Hamburger chain tweeted, “Changing the name to Meat.”
“How to solve a business problem:
Simply change the name,” was another quick reaction to the name change.
A Twitter user Nani posted two pictures and wrote: “if addicted”. It meant that if people were addicted to Facebook earlier, the new name change would be like fitting Meta as spectacles, referring to augmented reality.
There are many other interesting trolls too.
Facebook has recently been criticised for making profits by selling the rights of civilians. Some critics believe that the name change is to hide this problem.
