Facebook has changed its name to ‘Meta’ foreseeing virtual reality. Since the name of Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook and Oculus haven’t been changed, the users of these platforms will not be affected by the name change. Facebook CEO Zuckerberg, who is a fan of classics, explained that the word ‘meta’ comes from the Greek word ‘beyond’. A new logo has been unveiled at its headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The new logo has a blue infinity shape with the word ‘Meta’ written along with it.
Zuckerberg announced during Facebook Connect Augmented and Virtual Reality Conference that the parent company of Facebook will be known as ‘Meta’. All are guessing why there is a name change for Facebook.
In future, Facebook won’t be known as a social media company, but as a firm focussing on ‘metaverse’. Metaverse is a broader term. It is a space where people can meet, play games and do various activities with virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphones and other devices. Metaverse is altogether a virtual community space where people can get connected.
The term ‘Metaverse’ was used in the 1992 fiction penned by Neal Stephenson. Facebook has clarified that it will take 10-15 years to build products using metaverse technology. Zuckerberg said that he hopes that in the next decade, the metaverse will reach one billion people. This will be an ecosystem that gives employment opportunities for one million people. Facebook had said that it will hire 10,000 people in Europe to develop metaverse. Be it a journey to a virtual concert, trip to online space, buy clothes or do virtual trials of clothes, everything can be done that. Instead of seeing colleagues in a video call, it will be possible to see them virtually. Facebook had entered virtual reality earlier through its Oculus headsets.
Oculus Quest 2 VR gaming headset was presented by Facebook as a Christmas gift in 2020.
